DIY Concrete Fireplace

Backstory:

My husband and I bought a beautiful new home… with baby blue painted walls throughout (with an exception of a few gray walls placed randomly), outdated everything, NO landscaping (LITERALLY, not even grass), TURQUOISE painted garage doors, and the list continues forever.

Remodeling an entire house gets pricey to say the least. Luckily, my favorite hobby is DIYing all the things! That’s where our DIY concrete fireplace idea came into play.

What you will need:

Everything I used is linked above! As an amazon associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

We covered a huge open shelf and where the mantle was with sheetrock before we started!
  • **our fireplace was painted drywall so these specific instructions worked for us. If your fireplace is brick or rock, you will have to remove the rock and place cement boards (kind of like sheetrock) before you begin!**
  • Make sure the walls surrounding your fireplace are clean/wiped off
  • Add your concrete color to the water you are mixing with the feather mix (optional)
  • Mix your feather mix with water using a drill attachment. Mix until you have a thin consistency
  • Let your mix sit for 5 minutes
  • Fill your mud pan with the mixed concrete
  • Using your drywall trowel, start spreading a thin layer of concrete over your painted drywall. NO primer needed!!
  • Make sure you spread the concrete in THIN layers
  • Let the first layer dry for 24 hours (this is the hardest part, the waiting)
  • It will look splotchy/uneven until it is completely dry. Unfortunately, you HAVE to wait the full 24 hours!
  • Once the first layer is dry, sand any rough spots with a fine sanding sponge
  • Continue to spread the concrete in thin layers until you’re satisfied with the coverage and color! Remember to let each layer dry for 24 hours and sand after each one
  • Using a smooth wall paint roller, apply the sealant over the concrete

Our fireplace was finished after only two layers! I used the liquid cement color to give the concrete more of a taupe/brown tint. Without it, the concrete is gray. Completely up to you! Next step: DECORATING
